Claiming the top spot as king of the hill on yet another green auto ranking is the Toyota Prius. Based on it's overwhelming popularity, fuel efficiency and ultra low emissions, it's the Toyota Prius' title to lose. But keep a close eye on General Motors, with their commitment to more fuel efficient vehicles I expect to see them shaking up future rankings

#2 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

Honda was part of the hybrid revolution with their Insight, a two seat hybrid that achieved nearly 70 miles per gallon. With the Insight in the rearview, Honda is again near the top of the mountain with the Civic Hybrid. Only 2 points (based on our ranking system) behind the Toyota Prius, Honda is fighting their way back to the top.

Toyota places a second vehicle within the top three with the mid-size Camry Hybrid. The Camry Hybrid gets a combined fuel economy rating of 34 miles per gallon and gets high marks in the emissions categories. You can't help but wonder where Toyota is going to take their Synergy Drive in the future. Wherever they go, GreenAuto will be following closely behind to keep you up to date.

#4 2008 Smart Fortwo Coupe/Convertible

The Smart Fortwo comes on the scene in 2008 and lands the highest GreenAuto ranking for a non-hybrid gas vehicle. With a combined fuel economy of 36 MPG and high marks for greenhouse gas emissions, the Smart Fortwo is becoming the little engine that could. Some have noted it's relatively small size as a drawback, but at GreenAuto we see a car that can comfortably parallel park anywhere, even in Manhattan.

#5 2008 Mazda Tribute Hybrid

|
|

|
Coming in at 5, 6, and 7 are the Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape, and Mercury Mariner, respectively. Technically, all three are cousins built on the Ford Escape platform. However, there are noticeable differences in body style and performance. The Mazda Tribute is touted as more road worthy with a car feel without the limited cargo space of a car. However, when it comes to fuel economy and emissions, this truck out duals many cars, even in the compact class.
