I’m sure you have all noticed the most recent fad in car commercials. It seems like a lot of car companies are trying to capitalize on the increase in gas prices. They are offering various bonuses such as free gas for the summer or gas for $2.99 for the next three years, etc., with every purchase of a certain model of car. When did having to pay $2.99 per gallon of gasoline become a good thing? I may sound like my grandfather talking about hot dogs being a nickel but I can remember paying a buck something for a gallon of gas not too long ago, and I’m only in my 20’s. I feel like we are being conditioned into accepting inflation by being shocked at first with major increases, in order to lessen our anger at paying more in the long run. For instance, gas will shoot up abruptly in price yet then will be lowered. The catch is that it will never be lowered back to what we originally paid for it. Therefore we are being tricked into believing a price is low just because it is lower than an extremely high price. We slowly forget about the original price. We accept moderately higher prices because we are happy that we don’t have to pay that extremely high price we paid for an awful 2-3 week period. Sadly we are in one of those periods right now. I own a 4 cylinder and my bank is breaking every time I fill up. Now car companies are trying to use this crisis as bait, and radio stations are advertising by broadcasting from gas stations and giving away gas for cheap for a limited time! Something about that just doesn’t sit right with me. Yet it could be a good thing because it will relieve some economic stress for those in need of a new car and getting this deal along with it. Yet how can the car companies afford to just give way gas all of a sudden, which has been the world’s hottest commodity? Are they getting it at some wholesale bulk rate? If so I want to know their supplier. What I’m basically saying is I’m confused. I don’t know who to blame for inflation. Everywhere I look I feel like I am being deceived. Is it all one big conspiracy? Is the war overseas connected to all of this in some way? If you’ve noticed gas isn’t the only thing that keeps going up in price. Food is also on the rise as well as many other items we as a consumer society rely on. The dollar is weakening! In fact sometimes I think the insane increase in gas prices is just to create a diversion, keeping the public distracted from the higher cost of everything else. But every time I start acting paranoid and start thinking conspiracy, I come to the realization that this has all been happening for a long time now. It’s a consumer society and I am guilty of the need for excess consumption myself, including gasoline. I’m the fool who pays the price everyday. That’s why I used to pay 5 dollars to get into a movie on a Saturday night, now I pay 12. That’s why my parents paid a quarter for a slice of pizza and I pay $2.50. Inflation is an unstoppable inexorable force. I just have one suggestion for all who are reading this blog. When you receive your stimulus payment from the government, do not spend it on gas. Instead put it towards a down payment on your next car. Remember you’ll probably get at least 2 months free gas with your purchase. Oh, and one more very important thing, make sure it’s a GREEN AUTO!!!
Just another thought from the mind of the nutty Professor…………………………..
