It definitely makes sense that smaller cars are usually more economically efficient because they have smaller gas tanks and smaller engines. After all, good things sometimes come in small packages. Yet having less power, torque and pick up are but a few sacrifices one must make when owning a mini car. Nowadays that is merely a small price to pay when compared to the cost of fuel. The mini-cooper has gained in popularity over the last decade and remains one of the most popular mini cars on the market (see green autos top ten for details). Yet just as it took over its mini predecessor, the VW Beetle, it is time for even more efficient mini cars to hit the road. Recently I have seen more and more Smart Fortwo coupes on the road (see green autos top ten for details). Hopefully the moderate success of the Smart will pave the way for the future of tiny automobiles. GM’s Chevy Beat concept is said to be put into production in Europe sooner than later according to an announcement made by Chevy General Manager Ed Peper at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. A recent vote was conducted online where voters chose what Chevy concept they liked the most. The Beat concept got the most votes. Therefore Chevy plans to take action and put a “city” car into production based largely on the concept of the Beat. While only being released in Europe at first this car is reportedly going to eventually be imported to the U.S. This will obviously be based on how well the car sells initially in the market. Implementing the roots of the Beat, the city car will be the newest attempt at making a little idea into a huge success! Chevy’s Groove concept, which came in a close second to the Beat, is also a mini car prototype that may see production shortly following the Beat.[1][1] Will The Groove and the Beat be the new rhythm of the streets? Like most other things green, we have to wait and see.
