The theory that riding a motorcycle means you are being “environmentally” conscious is slowly becoming irrelevant. Motorbikes may get you way better gas mileage than a car but that does not necessarily equate to cleaner emissions. Now that the spring is coming I notice more motorcycles on the road as I drive back and forth to work. If you are currently using your bike in order to have a “greener” everyday commute, my suggestion would be to stick to weekend joyrides and take the car to work. I recently read that motorcycles can release up to 100 times more hydrocarbon emissions than your standard hybrid. So the next time you blow by a Prius on your cool looking hog and laugh at the awkward body style, ask not what your world can do for you, ask what you can do for your world. Then as you light up your cigarette and blow out smoke filled with thousands of harmful toxins, ask yourself the same question. If you consider yourself an environmentally active person, yet you just love riding your motorcycle and smoking cigarettes, remember what a great man once said:
“It’s not easy being green!”
