The Long Island Prius Owner’s Group (www.lipog.org) is an organization dedicated to more than just a car. They are dedicated to a cause. My partner and I attended their most recent meeting on behalf of GreenAuto.com on Sunday, April 13. The Prius owner’s who were present at the event seemed genuinely interested in our site. After speaking with some of them I realized that we all share a common vision. Everyone that I spoke to chose to buy a Prius for a variety of reasons. Yet the one common and main reason was cleaner emissions for the environment. Horacio, the head of the group, owns the coolest prius that I’ve ever seen. This dual powered masterpiece was on display at the end of a long line of Prius models. It sat there as the king of the jungle, in a parking space that seemed like a throne. It is equipped with various accessories and additions that give it a sportier appearance than your average prius (On a side note Toyota has released some prototype photos of a newer, sportier model of the prius). In fact Horacio’s prius is award winning. It won Best in Show at HybridFest 2007.

The enthusiastic vibe I got from all of these people made me think that we represent merely the beginning of a movement that may gain in popularity quicker than some may think due to the rise in oil prices. Robert, a Prius owner at the event, also owns his own online “green” store that specializes in eco-friendly products made of ‘environmentally sensitive’ materials (www.greenercountry.com). This brought a smile to my face because it shows how hybrid owners are not just focused on saving money in gas, they represent a subculture of people whose goal it is to save the environment, or at least do what they can to help save it. One thing Robert said that stuck out in my mind was that he has counted at least 50 times, since he has owned his Prius in August, where he was passing by bumper to bumper traffic while driving in the HOV lane. New York Prius owners are given what is known as a Clean Pass. With a Clean Pass Vehicle you can ride in the HOV lane on the LIE. Those from the New York area realize how valuable that can be when traveling in rush hour traffic during a daily commute. This is just one of the many advantages to owning a hybrid vehicle. In fact if you don’t have the luxury of being able to run out and buy a Prius immediately, start by car pooling. By car pooling to work you are cutting the emissions in half by using one car instead of two. Plus you can use the HOV lane!

Going to this event was a positive experience for all of us. They hold events every month, some in which demonstrations are given on how to install the latest accessories on your Prius, etc. They also go on road trips and attend other shows and events. Be sure to check out their websites if you are interested in learning more.
Stay Green,
The Green Auto Team.
